Abu Dhabi - UAE
The Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi launched the “Emirati Hospitality” standards for hotels and hotel apartments in the emirate, in a step aimed at transforming local culture from an introductory element of the destination into a tangible part of the guest’s experience, starting from the pre-arrival stage until leaving the hotel.
65 practical standards across eight stages
The new framework consists of 65 practical, measurable standards covering eight stages of the visitor’s journey. Hotels apply at least 20 standards, including 10 mandatory and 10 chosen by the facility, while hotel apartments follow a simplified framework that includes at least 10 standards, half of which are mandatory. Full implementation at the emirate level will begin in the first quarter of 2027.
A tangible impact on the details of daily accommodation
The guest will feel the impact of the standards in daily details; From welcoming and offering Emirati coffee and local dates to introducing traditional dishes such as Harees and Balaleet. The requirements also include the presence of an employee in the reception area wearing traditional Emirati clothing, the introduction of an element inspired by Emirati heritage in one of the public areas of the hotel, in addition to enabling guest service and restaurant staff to introduce at least three traditional Emirati dishes and explain their connection to the local food culture.
Identity is a pillar of the tourist experience
In this context, Saleh Mohammed Al Jaziri, Director General of Tourism at the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi, said that the standards transform the values of Emirati hospitality into a unified institutional framework, ensuring their consistent presence throughout the stages of the visitor’s journey and deepening his connection with Abu Dhabi.
A new brand that enhances the competitiveness of establishments
The department intends to launch the “Emirati Hospitality” label directed to visitors, awarded to establishments that exceed the minimum requirements across three levels of excellence. The initiative is linked to the objectives of the Abu Dhabi Tourism Strategy 2030, by providing an experience that combines international hospitality standards with local cultural identity.
What do the standards mean for Arab tourists and investors?
This step represents a double opportunity for Arab tourists and investors. Gulf and Arab tourists will find in Abu Dhabi hotels an environment closer to their culture, from coffee and dates to popular dishes and Emirati dress, which gives them a sense of belonging and makes the stay part of the cultural experience and not just a place to stay the night. As for the Arab investor, the new standards open the door to new specializations and support services, from training cadres in local hospitality to supplying heritage and food products, with the competitive advantage this provides for establishments adhering to the standards in attracting Gulf, Arab and foreign markets alike.
