Damascus - Syria
Syria is witnessing a remarkable movement in the aviation sector, as Damascus is working to restructure its regional and international air relations, in an effort whose goals go beyond simply operating flights to include stimulating tourism and investment and opening new channels of communication with major Arab markets.
Damascus Airport is subject to a comprehensive Egyptian review
Within the framework of bilateral cooperation, a technical delegation from the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority arrived at Damascus International Airport, where it conducted a thorough field tour that included security and safety facilities and ground services, with the aim of assessing the airport’s readiness to receive direct flights between the two countries. This step comes at a time when Egyptian-Syrian relations are witnessing increasing momentum, and the return of the air route is a pivotal step to facilitate the movement of business travelers, tourists and visitors, especially with the increasing demand for travel between the two countries for the purposes of medical and educational tourism and family ties.
"Open skies" with Riyadh enhances transportation movement
On the Saudi side, Syria signed an air transport agreement based on the “open skies” principle, which allows companies from both sides greater freedom to operate flights and increase their number according to market requirements. The agreement gains special importance in light of the increasing number of Syrian pilgrims and visitors, in addition to opening new horizons for investment and business movement between the two countries. It also contributes to strengthening social ties between the two brotherly peoples.
New aircraft enhance the national carrier's fleet
Development efforts were not limited to the operational aspect only, but extended to modernizing the Syrian Airlines fleet, as the company received the first two Airbus A320 aircraft as part of a deal that included eight aircraft, in a step aimed at improving operating efficiency and increasing the number of destinations. This comes in conjunction with comprehensive development projects at Damascus Airport, including expansion and digital transformation, in addition to introducing cybersecurity systems and artificial intelligence technologies into operational processes.
Tourism awaits easy arrival
Regular aviation represents a vital lifeline for any tourism renaissance. A tourist destination, no matter how much it possesses, cannot flourish without a reliable transportation network linking it to the world. Syria, which has a unique historical and archaeological heritage, and diverse religious and natural tourism components, is betting on these steps to re-attract Arab and foreign tourists and investors, especially with the Gulf markets’ increasing interest in the Syrian market as a promising investment and tourism destination.
