Cairo - Egypt
From the pyramids to a museum that takes center stage
Less than a year after its official opening, the Grand Egyptian Museum recorded more than 6.5 million visitors, placing itself at the forefront of the most visited museums in the world, according to data from the Egyptian Economic and Social Development Plan for the fiscal year 2025/2026.
The museum was officially opened on November 1, 2025, in the presence of international leaders and delegations, adding a new cultural destination to the pyramids area, and becoming the largest archaeological museum in the world dedicated to one civilization.
6.5 million change the equation
The number gains its importance when compared to major names on the map of international museums; The British Museum received about 6.5 million visitors during the entire year 2024, while the Metropolitan Museum in New York received about 5.7 million in the same year. The comparison remains indicative and not a unified classification, due to the differences in time periods and methodologies for calculating visits.
The treasures of Tutankhamun are at the heart of the experience
The bet is not based on the size of the building alone, but rather on an experience that brings together thousands of artifacts with modern display techniques, most notably the King Tutankhamun collection that the museum presents together in one place, so that the visit turns from viewing individual pieces into an integrated journey within ancient Egyptian civilization.
Reservation goes to phone
With the increase in demand, the museum administration moved to strengthen official reservation channels. In July, access to the museum's official website was made available through Egyptian mobile phone companies' applications, in a move aimed at facilitating the purchase of tickets and protecting the visitor from fake websites.
In this context, Dr. Ahmed Ghoneim, CEO of the Grand Egyptian Museum Authority, stressed that the official website remains the only official channel for booking visits and obtaining museum information, calling on the public to be wary of unofficial sites and links.
Cairo wins a new tourist day
For the Arab tourist, the museum gives an additional reason to rearrange the program for visiting Cairo and Giza, especially with its location next to the pyramids. As for tourism and investment, the influx of millions of visitors does not stop at the box office; Rather, it extends to hotels, restaurants, transportation, retail, and tourism experiences surrounding the pyramids area.
Here lies the importance of the number: The Grand Egyptian Museum is no longer an archaeological project waiting for visitors. Rather, according to Egyptian data, it has become one of the largest drivers of cultural tourism in the world.
