Jakarta - Indonesia
During the past hours, Indonesia witnessed a wave of violent volcanic activity, led by the Anak Krakatau volcano in the Sunda Strait, which erupted violently last Friday and lasted for about 25 hours, causing a state of air paralysis and paralyzing travel at one of the world's busiest airports.
170 thousand passengers are stranded
The rising volcanic ash, which reached a height of 15,000 meters, caused the suspension of flights at 8 major airports, including Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in the capital, Jakarta, which led to the delay and cancellation of more than 1,558 flights, suspending tens of thousands of passengers, as these repercussions affected about 170,000 passengers, while the airport continues to be closed until Monday evening.
5 volcanoes on alert
In a remarkable development, the Indonesian authorities revealed an increase in volcanic activity in several regions, as 5 volcanoes were monitored at the third “alert” level: Anak Krakatau, Semeru, Sinabung, Merapi, and Leotopi-Laki, along with 22 other volcanoes at the second “warning” level. Jakarta and its environs witnessed ash fall, which affected daily life and led to the cancellation of school activities and fishing trips.
Warnings for tourists
The Indonesian Geological Agency kept the activity level of the Anak Krakatau volcano at level three, while warning tourists and residents not to approach within 3 kilometers of the active crater, amid assurances that there is no imminent tsunami danger. Indonesia is located on the "Ring of Fire" in the Pacific Ocean, and contains about 130 active volcanoes, making it one of the most volcanically and seismically active regions in the world.
