Athens - Tokyo
Visiting Palos Beach on the Greek island of Crete is no longer a serene experience as its famous photos on social media platforms suggest; Video clips showed stifling crowding at the marina and along the sand, with large numbers of tourists arriving at the same time.

Palos is considered one of the most prominent natural beaches in Crete, thanks to its turquoise waters, white sand, and location surrounded by mountains. However, its increasing popularity turned it during the peak season into a destination suffering from increasing tourist pressure, to the point that reaching the beach became more like passing through a crowded point than a recreational trip.

Thousands of visitors in one day

The beach receives between 4,000 and 5,000 visitors daily during the summer, most of whom arrive via cruises and tourist boats. The problem is concentrated at the marina, where the movement of arrivals and departures intersects in a limited space, leading to long queues and temporary chaos and affecting the visitors’ experience and the surrounding environment.
According to local reports, the Greek authorities are considering implementing a pre-booking system, in addition to limiting the number of visitors in specific time periods. One of the proposals includes allowing only 1,200 people to enter during each three-hour period, to ensure the distribution of movement and reduce pressure on the site.

Instagram is changing the map of travel

The Palos crisis reflects a broader phenomenon affecting natural destinations around the world, after popular photos on Instagram and TikTok prompted millions of travelers to search for the same locations at the same time. Thus, a shot that looks perfect on the phone may turn into a scene of waiting and jostling upon arrival.

Advice for Arab tourists

For Arab tourists, it is advisable to plan a visit to the beach outside peak hours, and to check in advance any reservation system or entry restrictions. Choosing the timing of the trip is no less important than choosing the destination, especially when the beautiful nature threatens to turn into a long tourist line.
