How many times have we seen a picture of a place and immediately said: “I should go there one day”? Sometimes we don't know much about a country, and we haven't read about its cities or planned to visit it, but one photo is enough to put it on our travel list for years.
For me, the Taj Mahal was one of those places. I saw his pictures years ago, and like everyone else, India was associated in my mind with that famous white building. Today, as I visit India and see it in front of me for the first time, I think about the ability of one place to attract travelers from all over the world, some of whom traveled thousands of kilometers just to stand in front of the image that they have known for so long.
And the matter is not limited to the Taj Mahal. The image of the Eiffel Tower made Paris a dream for generations of travelers, the pyramids summed up the greatness of Egyptian history in a scene known to the world, and the Great Wall of China became one of the images that prompted many to put China on the list of countries they wanted to discover.
These places have gone beyond being tourist sites, and have become images linked to the identity of their countries. Here the power of image appears in the tourism industry; The beginning may be just an image we see in a book or movie, or today on social media, but with time it turns into a desire, then into a search, a reservation, and a travel ticket.
The beautiful thing is that a traveler may come for one place, but he does not leave after seeing it only. Whoever travels to India for the Taj Mahal will discover cities, cultures, cuisine, and other experiences, and whoever dreams of an image of the pyramids will find before him an Egypt much larger than the image he came for. Thus, one landmark turns into a gateway to discovering an entire country, and hotels, restaurants, markets, transportation, and other sectors benefit from the trip.
This is why I believe that investing in, preserving and promoting iconic sites is not just an interest in a tourist attraction, but rather an investment in the image of the country itself.
The story may begin with an image that we memorize for years, and then a day comes when we face it as reality. Perhaps this is one of the most beautiful aspects of travel: to see with our own eyes a place that we have visited for a long time in our imagination.
